Installations, Still and Moving images

OFFSCREEN dedicates an entire floor of the Hôtel Salomon de Rothschild to Anthony McCall, an international figure in contemporary art and experimental cinema. Anthony McCall has placed the question of light, the source of all images, at the centre of his work. He will exhibit a monumental and immersive work to be shown for the first time in France.

Anthony McCall drew inspiration from both the visual arts and cinema to create his first “solid-light” film, Line Describing a Cone, in 1973, in which a volumetric form of light materialized by mist moves slowly through three-dimensional space. When Anthony McCall’s works are projected in a dark room, without chairs or screens, they become luminous forms like ‘light sculptures’: a moving drawing on the wall, and a volumetric form in the space materialized by the mist. Oscillating between sculpture, drawing and video, his work offers the viewer both a physical and a visual experience. Anthony McCall is represented by Galerie Martine Aboucaya, Paris France, and Thomas Zander Gallery, Cologne Germany.
